Spring Walk Day Event May 7- Hosted by the Parent Council
Dear Vimy Families,
We are excited to announce that Vimy Ridge will be celebrating Spring Walk Day on May 7!
Spring Walk Day is an event that encourages students to arrive at school by walking and
wheeling in the fresh air (and likely some sunshine, a few puddles, and snow melt)! We
encourage as many students as possible to choose walking, biking, and busing to school on
May 7 – and every day!
Walking to school has many benefits such as improving physical and mental health, increasing
attention span and academic performance, and building self-esteem. The 2024 ParticipACTION
Report Card shows that only 39% of children in Canada (ages 5-17) are getting the
recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day, and walking to
school is a great way to become more active.
During February’s Winter Walk Day 42% of Vimy Ridge students walked all or part of the way to
school, and our spring goal is for even MORE walkers using active transportation to get to
school. Help us meet our goal and be part of the fun by walking or biking with your
child! If you live far from the school or if you’re driving to your next destination, consider parking
a block or two away from the school and walking the rest of the way.
For some extra motivation to be active this spring, students are encouraged to join the Hop!
Spring into Spring challenge. Students can use the Hop! app to log their walks to school or in
the community and discover the positive impact walking has on the environment. All students
who participate in the Hop! Spring Walk Challenge will be entered into a random prize draw to
win two admissions passes donated by Cosmic Adventures! Each pass admits one adult
and one child.
We hope you will join us in celebrating fun, healthy ways to get to school on May 7!
